Welcome Back to the Spirograph!

My spirograph is a generational toy.  According to the manual  in the box, if your local retailer doesn’t have one, you can send the Kenner Company 73c and they will mail you one.  It seriously took me two full minutes to figure out that the “c” was the cent sign!  Well, my grandparents 73c has certainly been put to good use over the years, first by my mother, then my cousins, by myself as a child, and now finally in a slightly different manner by adult me as a super cool crafting tool!

I’ve never been super artistic when it comes to free hand drawing.  Actually, that’s a total understatement, my drawing skill is roughly at the same level as when I was first busting out spirograph drawings in my basement as a child.  So I’m always on the lookout for creative new ways to come up with embroidery and quilting designs that don’t require free hand drawing.  I love my grandmothers’ method of using coloring book images and shape outlines from my grandfathers wood cutting book.  My more modern take on that is often free clip art images.  But one day as I was brainstorming on my commute home it hit me out of no where, “I wonder if my mother still has that spirograph somewhere?”  Suppose I shouldn’t complain about my mother’s pack rat tendencies anymore, because over Thanksgiving I was thrilled to get my hands on the original 1960s Spirograph.  Possibly the best find in the box was this sample of my childhood art, the title is really the highlight here:

Made by Me Jill Stemple

Apparently, I had healthy self-confidence in my artistic abilities as a child!  I’m still in the experimental phase of how this is all going to play out in my crafting, which is basically that awesome state where you have more ideas than time and finger strength to craft them all.  For now I’m launching a line of Super Spirograph Napkins and as a part of Giveaway Day at Sew, Mama, Sew!, I’m offering one lucky reader a chance to win a set of four.  I’m also doing a magazine/fabric giveaway for those readers who like to craft themselves!  Giveaway details below.

GIVEAWAY 1:

To win a set of the spirograph napkins tell me which colorway you’d like to win: red, periwinkle, teal, bright blue, green, yellow, or purple. Later today these will be over in my shop if you want to have a peek (Napkin Section).   Winner will be chosen by a random number generator.

GIVE AWAY 2:

Quiltermaker’s Magazine Winter 2010 V. 2, the 100 Block edition, is full of patterns for great new quilt blocks from top designers and quilt bloggers, you’ll surely find some inspiration to put a yard of Anna Marie Horner Fabric to good use.  Enter this giveaway by  leaving a separate comment telling me something that you have re-purposed into a crafting tool (think spirograph design maker or chopstick needle turner).  It doesn’t have to be rocket science, but I’ll be choosing this winner by the most interesting/creative, so the more random the better.

Both giveaways will be open through 12/17/10 8:59pm EST.   Items will be shipped priority mail on 12/18/10, so you can expect to get them by Christmas if you are in the USA.  Giveaway open internationally, but internationally readers won’t receive items by Christmas (short of a post office Christmas miracle). Please make sure I have an email address to contact you if you’ve won, if I’m unable to contact you I will pick an alternate winner.  Good luck and looking forward to all the creative suggestions!

Update Note: I’ve had some requests to purchase sets of these.  I won’t be getting many, if any up in the shop today, but if you would like a set I will do custom orders for up to 15 people and they will ship in time for Christmas (USA only).  Convo me on etsy or email me at jill.stemple(at)gmail.com if you are interested.  Thanks!

Update 2: Yes, I will do a multi-colored set if you prefer a mix of colors.

  9. I’ve used chopsticks and pencils to turn out points!

  10. Teal napkins! Those are lovely. Thanks for the great giveaway.

  11. The book and the fabric would be put to good use in my studio!

I use a hat box as a portable scrap bin! It makes it really easy to tote to quilting bees and I can just make crumb blocks easily with the scraps I keep in there. The lid can also be put to good use wherever you are!

  12. Oh, I loved my spirograph too! I’d love the red or blue I think:) I’m hosting a giveaway too, so pop on over if you have some time…

  13. I’ve used chip clips to hold quilt binding? Does that count? Shower curtain rings (with the clips) and a boot shoe string in the craft room to hang quilts on the design wall…. Thanks for the chance at that lovely fabric and the magazine!

  14. oh i loved spirograph!! is that in stores again? i would choose bright blue. thanks for the giveaway love! 😉

  15. I would love red!

  16. I melted down old record and use them as storage containers in my craft room.

  17. The napkins would be great…any color! Thank you and Merry CHristmas!
    lee_nicholas@hotmail.com

  18. my fave colour would be green 🙂

I think this is a GREAT giveaway!
    Merry Christmas!

  19. the most creative thing I’ve done is margine container lids as pattern/templates….

  20. Ohhh I like green! And I soo remember that toy! 🙂

  21. Repurposing is my game. Partly because it’s fun …partly because I’m uh frugal. 🙂 My 2 always use items are a bathmat and these Glade glass candle holders {Glad sells little candles everywhere that come in a 3 pack that your supposed to put on them}. The bathmat is because I hate dragging my ironning board out and this just rolls and I can throw on top of the table and iron away. And the candle holder has a magnet in it (the candles that go w/ it obviously have little magnets on them too) so my pins just kind of gravitate to it. I think I got it for free with my coupons and once the candle burned out this is just kind of what happened. Not so much creative but essential in my book!

  22. I love the teal!

  23. Very cool – spirograph was a lot of fun in my day too. I am into greens right now. Thanks for the giveaway and flashback to the past! :0)

  24. Tweezers for turning tubes!

  25. I repurpose long tank tops and old tops with snaps in the crouch…LOL I don’t like the snaps so I cut off the fabric to the waste. I then cut an old tank top in half at the waist and sew the bottom half to the bottom half of the top. It repurposes a shirt I really like, minus the snaps.

  26. NO WAY! I just bought my 5 year old niece a spirograph for Christmas because I saw it in the store and I was like “YES! I LOVED THIS THING WHEN I WAS A KID!!” Seriously . . . I was a bit overexcited about my find. Hope she likes it as much as I did/do.

BTW, I love the napkin idea. 🙂 I would take green.

Of course, I would love prize #2 too. Pick me twice! You know you want to! 😉

    skooksplayground[at]gmail[dot]com

  29. Oh what a wonderful give-away. The napkins are grand, and while all colors are lovely, yellow or green is my favorite.
Congrats also on your new Bernina. I have a QE150 and it has been a great machine. My e-mail and website should be visible to you BTW. Hope so.

  30. bright blue

  31. Love the purple!

  32. I use PP band (hard band for packaging) to hold the ruffles in place when I sew ruffles on clothings

  33. I would love the teal napkins. They are so sweet. Thanks

  34. I don’t have pattern weights so I use whatever’s close- my cell phone, the remote, my daughter’s toys, etc.

  35. For my repurposing comment: my dog comes in handy when I am laying fabric down and cutting. He lays on the fabric and keeps it steady. : )
    espmax(at)gmail(dot)com

  43. I remember my spirograph and I loved it. I would love to win the napkins.

Thanks for such an interesting giveaway post.

    Janice

  44. Periwinkle.
    Great idea and presentation.

  45. i was ALL over the spirograph as a kid. 🙂 i’d go with teal.

i use freezer paper to make my own fabric stencils…it’s gotten pretty popular lately so lots of people do it. but that’s because it’s genius!

  46. Oh my gosh, I want to find our old spirograph set now! I really like those napkins and would love to win some in the green colorway.

  47. I love those napkins. Ours are looking a bit sad. I would like any color you would like to stitch excapt for the green or yellow (reminds me too much of my 70’s style kitchen I am saving up to remodel 🙂 ). Thanks for the chance to win!

  48. Memories – I remember my spirograph – cool. The green napkins would go w/ my table decor but I like them all. I use double sided tape to keep my templates from slipping.

  49. I love the spiralgrah, great idea to use it for making designs on other stuff. I heart yellow. texhelena(at)aol(dot)com

  50. I would love the napkins in the Red colorway!!! jinglesells at gmail dot com

And I think I’d love those napkins in yellow 🙂
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  55. That’s it! I am heading down to the basement right now to look for my kiddo’s spirograph. I’ve been looking for an excuse to clean out the basement and now I have one. Spiro-inspiration!
Long ago, my sister asked me if Spiro Agnew invented that toy.
Pardon me, my age is showing.
    I love all things periwinkle.

  56. Gosh, I loved my spirograph as a kid! 🙂

I’d like any of your colors … but periwinkle speaks to me year round.

    🙂 Linda

  57. Periwinkle sounds lovely. I love to use freezer paper to trace patterns on for things made out of felt. I iron it to the felt, which makes it SOOOOO much easier and more accurate to cut out. I don’t know if that’s exactly revolutionary or anything, since freezer paper is often used in crafty stuff, but it’s really helped me! 🙂 Thank you for the giveaway!

  58. I’d love the teal napkins!

  59. purple rocks! those are cool.

  60. I love these. They are so sciencey-modern-artistic. Yellow would be my choice of color.

  61. Those are beautiful knitted afghans in your next post especially the one with the thin color stripes (just wanted you to know). Anyway…I would love some yellow spirograph napkins. Thanks for the chance to win. Happy Christmas.

  64. Periwinkle sounds lovely! I loved spirographs when I was a kid too, love the idea of popping them on napkins – clever 🙂

  65. I would LOVE the Red or Green napkins as a gift for my sister-in-law!
Thanks for the chance to win!
    justforthis917 [at] yahoo [dot] com

  66. oh, i’d pick red! thanks for the opportunity! and thanks for entering my giveaway too!

  67. I’d love to win the purple napkins! Such beautiful work.

  68. Hello and thank you for the giveaway. I work in the medical field and came up with the idea to use medical exam table paper to use as pattern paper. It is very long and quite wide and is perfect because you can see through it and it’s a nice weight. I usually use it to trace my patterns so incase my size changes I can just use the other sizes and don’t have to rebuy a pattern. Takes more time, but is worth it in the end since I fluncuate in size quite a bit. Hope you have a happy holidays! Michelle

  69. Bright blue!

I’m participating in the Sew, Mama, Sew Giveaway Day! I hope you have time to stop over and enter my giveaway at homemakerhoney.com

  76. I’m an old school Spirographer too! In fact on Saturday I pulled my vintage set out of the attic for my daughters. 🙂

I love the teal blue and they’d be perfect for our dining room.

Thanks for the giveaway! Robyn (dot) Geddes (at) gmail (dot) com

  80. I like the red napkins…lovely handmade touch to a home cooked meal!

  81. Oh my gosh LOVE the spirograph! I wish I still had mine! I would loooove a set in different colors, if applicable. If not, then yellow would be amazing 🙂
    Thank you so much!

  82. I’m kinda sorta new with crafting and whatnot but I do try to re-purpose as much as I can! I use toilet paper rolls for wrapping garland around. An empty diet coke bottle filled with water sits close to my iron so I can add water when it gets low without having to leave what I’m doing. I wash out my Classico Spaghetti Sauce jars, save the lids, and use them all over. I’ve filled them with candy around halloween for decorations, put candles in them for cute lighting, set them out when it’s rained to collect water for my garden. Agh. I hate that my mind is drawing a blank. Well, anyway 😉 Thank you so much for this great giveaway!

  83. I would like the red set please! Thank you for sharing.

  84. I would pick the blue napkins. They are really cute.

  85. Now that my children are grown, I was cleaning out a drawer of hair ties and found many hair clips. They look just like the snap clips to use when sewing binding. SO I added them to my binding box. Now instead of just plain ones, I have glitter ones and butterfly ones and painted ones. I think of my girls whenever I am binding.

  86. I LOVED my spirograph! I like the red ones… Thank you! mbkufen@yahoo.com

  87. I made my son a duffle coat recently and made the string part of the toggles out of shoe laces, and cut up some leather for the triangle bits.

  88. Those spirograph napkins are great! What a good idea. I’d choose teal.

  89. I use my old clear lettuce boxes for storage – fat quarters, threads and ribbons all go well in them.

  90. Those spirograph napkins in preiwinkle are adorable!!!

    erin.

    erin.gwinn@gmail.com

  91. I LOVE those napkins! The purple Spirograph would be so cute! My family uses cloth napkins every day, these would be a great addition to our collection.

  92. Can we get that Spirograph set as a prize? I think we had that exact same set in our house. Wonder where ti is now…. Anyway… I’d love yellow spiros. Thanks! mcglen8 (at) gmail (dot) com

  93. The spirograph set looked so familiar! Teal would be nice.

  94. andreajenephotography

Great giveaway!!! It sounds like you will be busy getting orders ready to ship!!! I love the 100 blocks as I am new to quilting!!!

  95. I used my son’s music stand to put yarn skeins on and then loosened the nut to let it move freely as I wound the yarn into balls. But then he moved out and took the music stand with him!

  96. Your napkins are beautiful…

I would love to win #2, because I’m so curious to see what blocks are in that magazine! =) Thank you!

  97. oooo, red please! LOVE the spirograph.

  98. I would love some red spirograph napkins … alas I can’t think of any clever repurposing right now ….. maybe later

  99. the red napkins are pretty cool!

  100. I use bottle caps, cover them in squares of fabric gathered on the bottom, stitch together, and have great coasters/ plant trivets

    Desiree
    weeshareblog@gmail.com

  101. those are all so lovely!!!!

  102. I use cups and mugs and plates as circle templates. as you say not rocket scientist but you can get a good variety of sizes.
I so want to win a copy of that magazine.

  103. Well – in the old days before computers (think photoshop, drawing software), we used to use ChartPak ruboff letters to label photographs. There was a special burnishing tool that would make the letters and symbols transfer smoothly to the photographic paper.
I use the burnishing tool to stuff fiberfill into felted decorations and pin cushions.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

  104. I use ice cream lids for templates…and I get to eat the ice cream..it’s a win, win for me….Speaking of WIN…love to win your give away!! Thanks for the chance!
    Paulette

  105. i would love the book & fabric – have been pining after AMH fabrics and don’t have ANY! thanks for the chance to win.

i’m stumped on what i have repurposed into a crafting tool… the best i can think of is using a double-pointed knitting needle as a makeshift bodkin! it didn’t work very well, i wouldn’t advise it. 😉

  106. I love those! If I won I’d love a multi-colored set. I repurpose things all the time- plates, cups, jars for tracing curves. Chopsticks or knitting needles for tube-turners or corner-pokers. I keep my buttons in a pretty wooden box that once held caramels and pretty wooden sppols of thread (too old to use) in an old blue Bell jar!

  107. Green is my favourite!

  108. I use the poker tool from my dissecting kit to help feed/guide fabric while I’m sewing.

  109. Right now I am using binder clips to keep the edges of my quilt from getting frayed and linty while quilting it in the hoop. To make the quilt sandwich, I cleaned off my late father’s wood turning clamps and used those to clamp my quilt to the edge of the table and stretch it taut. As I basted the sandwich, I just folded the quilt over just short of the last line and clamped again. I use shoe box paper for sewing the pesky ends of fabric so the sewing machine won’t eat it and the orange stick as my “stiletto”. My thread catcher and cutting mat catcher is the bottom of a sharps needle container. It is heavy and deep enough that it doesn’t turn over/spill anything. Hope one of these makes for a win. Thanks for the interesting giveaway. p.s. I used my Dad’s wood turning spirograph to mark a circle – wasn’t that good at it — but one of those pantographs was great at tracing designs double (like Thomas Jefferson did when he wrote two manuscripts at once) for some quilting motifs. alternate email mlwright29 (at) hotmail (dot) com

  110. Wow – i LOVE the napkins. So cute. I think I’d like the blue best, but they’re all great!

  111. My daughter can enter for the 100 Quilt blocks drawing, and I would like to enter for the spirograph napkins in periwinkle. My second choice is green, if you want a second choice. Merry Christmas!

  112. We used to have one of those- so fun. The colors all sound fabulous- would you do a mix? If I had to choose- blue, I guess.

  113. The Spirograph was my very first craft item! I loved it. I would love to win a red set of your napkins.

  114. I would like blue or purple napkins.

  115. So cool. The multicolor set would be fantastic.

  116. oh I like the red ones!!

  117. Candace Henderson

This is such a great idea. I totally had that set and used it all the time. Wish I still had it and may have to keep my eyes out! I would be so excited to have those napkins! Thanks for a great giveaway!

  118. Spirograph! I haven’t seen one for years!
The green napkins would be lovely in my kitchen 🙂

  119. very cool! i would love that magazine and fabric! lately, i have been wrapping strips of fabric around pipe cleaners, then rolling the pipe cleaner into a rose like shape…tacking it down with some stitchens, then sewing it onto a elastic hair tie. voila … christmas presents for all the little girls i know! except my own daughter, who refuses to wear her hair up!

  120. I love love love love your napkins and if I was luck and won a set I’d want teal 🙂

  121. 100 Quilt Blocks Vol2:
I need pin cushions everywhere, I’m pinning, I’m unpinning, I need a pin the hold these together…
I use an old woolen mitten made 40 years ago by my MIL on my sewing machine table. It sits on the far right side, never slips and is big enough to hold all my pins.
    Susan B

  122. Spirograph:
Just about my speed for drawing too. I’m amazed at people who can draw and paint. I’ll stick to sewing cloth thanks.
My dinning room is blue, but really I like any or all colors!
    Susan B

  123. I would totally love red or purple…really red though. I MISS MY SPIROGRAPH!!! It was one of my favorite things as a kid!! Thank you for bringing back some fond memories.

  124. I would love a mix of yellow and green spirograph napkins.
I loved that toy/tool when I was little too – wish I still had one.
I think I repurpose just about everything into a craft tool and/or supply.
The old pasta machine became a polymer clay roller, the window is my lightbox for embroidery transfer, sweaters and sheets become fabric for assorted projects, and atin Holly Hobby kitchen dishwasher is where I stash my charm packs!
hugs & happy holidays from ON, Canada
    Heidi

  125. hmmm, that was supposed to be 2 comments. I really need to pay more attention to the details 🙂 The other entry was for the fabulous napkins.

Ok, well I can add that I upcycle tuna cans into pincushion bases (covered in felt). They make adorable tree stumps and grassy knolls.

  126. those napkins are the bomb! purple is one of my current faves and it would look great in our orange kitchen (well, at least i think it would look great).

  127. I used to have one of those as a kid! I loved it so much…I would really like the teal napkins.
    Thanks for the giveaway!
    embyrfire(at)hotmail(dot)com

  128. Oh, and separate post for the book/fabric. I found that empty spools make really cute snowman/santa ornaments. You take one, paint it white and the top edge black and paint a snowman’s face on it (or santa, painting the top red). Then thread some ribbon through the middle hole and make a loop to hang it!
    embyrfire(at)hotmail(dot)com

  129. Oooh, now *that* is fabulous. I’m not even sure I can wait for the 17th to find out if I’ve won. I might have to go hunt down a spirograph. Yikes! And not to be difficult (or easy?) I would choose a mix of colors. One red, one teal, one… well, we’re not picky around here. Thanks for the chance to win *and* the fabulous idea.

  130. i’d love blue napkins 🙂 I remember my set, lol, it was so much fun

    dnadams[at]gmail[dot]com

  131. Also, for the quilt blocks.. I use hairspray as a basting spray [does that count?] lol. It works REALLY well.

    dnadams[at]gmail[dot]com

  132. Oh my gosh! I totally forgot about the spirograph! I LOVED mine as a kid. I wonder if we could still send off 73c and get one in the mail!

Love the idea of a multi-colored set, and I have seen that book a couple times now. It will be on my browse list on our next bookstore date (yes, my husband and I have dates at the bookstore: coffee and browsing).

  133. I would pick yellow 🙂 Thanks for the great giveaway!

  134. Purple or red… I have trouble making important decisions 🙂 Merry Christmas!

  135. I recently came across the idea of using paint sticks/stirrers as Christmas ornaments.

  136. These look so neat. I like the idea of teal and red

  137. What a great idea! I’d love a set in red or teal. Thanks for the giveaway!

  138. Purple is my favorite color, so I guess that would always be my first choice…lol

they are very nice- and I’d forgotten all about the spirograph – what a fun toy that was.

  139. i have been seeing spirographs everywhere lately!! but the napkins are amazing!!!

  140. I turned an old flurecent lighting box into a light box for tracing pattens, was great for small useage / little tracing stitcheries as if left to on for too long it would be burning hot! Would love to win your book. Thanks for the giveaway, I am a follower too.

  141. I used to have a spirograph, but it’s long gone now. I would choose red napkins. Thanks for the giveaway.

  142. Oh love those napkins…….red would be amazing with my red Fiesta ware
    wouldn’t it?
Thanks so much for a chance to win :0)

    Merry Christmas and Happy Sewing

  143. I like the blue napkins, thanks for the opportunity to win them

  144. Love the spirograph inspired napkins – I would love to win a set in teal!

  145. One of the companies has a glass holder out and you buy refills for it that melt down into scented oil (Glade Scented Oil Dispenser?) and then burns away. The holder is shaped perfectly to hold beads and has a magnetic portion in the center that will hold your beading needles! Very handy!

  146. what a fun idea, using the spirograph! i think i’d have to go with green ones….
thanks for the opportunity to win! 🙂

    sarita0818 at comcast dot net

  147. I’ve used my leg for a pin cushion before. Oops!

    Genevieve

  148. my big quilting repurpose is using shards of soap from the weenie little hotel soap bars to mark quilting desgins… it marks on many (although not quite all) fabrics, and washes off easily in the machine if it doesn’t rub off on its own. and there is certainly no shortage of it! *grin*
thanks for the opportunity to win! 🙂

    sarita0818 at comcast dot net

  149. I love the napkins! I think I’d go for a mixed colour set. Such a cute idea and I’m REALLY jealous of your old-school spirograph set – I may have to keep an eye out on ebay for one 😉

  150. What a fantastic idea! (I especially love the idea of purple designs on napkins. 🙂

  151. And as a separate comment for the book giveaway (I’ve been wanting to learn to quilt, so keeping my fingers crossed, haha!), I’ve used little metal rings from inside computers as eyes on softies (not for kids, however! Just in case). Adds a bit of a mechanical steampunk touch to a soft toy.

  152. I love the napkins. Green!

  153. I use a bone folder (creases paper) to poke out the corners of cushions (etc) when sewing.

  154. I loved my Spirograph when I was A child!
    I’d love teal please!

  155. I often use old belts from charity shops as handles for my bags!

  156. I would love to win a set of your napkins!! Red is my color choice. Thanks for the amazing giveaway!!

  157. I’d love to get a set of napkins, those are great! A mix of colours would be fantastic, what a great giveaway!

  158. Cool Spirograph napkins! I would choose teal if I am the lucky winner! Thanks for participating in Giveaway Day!

  159. My favorite re-purposed tool is a contraption I found in my late dad’s fix-it shop. He was an electrician and enjoyed rebuilding old radios. This item has a heavy base and an attached, upright post with a bendable joint. Two movable arms are attached to the upright post. The ends of these “arms” have metal clips that hold your project steady. I suppose it could be considered a third hand. I use it to hold the end of elastic, the end of a piece of fabric that I need to stay taut while I fiddle with trim, and I have utilized it to hold certain crafts while I am apply hot glue (no burnt fingers!). Thanks for participating in Giveaway Day!

  160. Hey cool designs and lovely photos!!!! Keep up the good work!

  161. Cute napkins–I may need to dig out our spirograph (yes, we still have one, too). I think I would choose the green, though an assortment would be fun. Thanks for the chance to win!
    ktyoung1(at)gmail(dot)com

  162. I love to quill paper and since the tools to do this are out of my reach (i live in Kenya) i happily use a tooth pick with a slit to roll the paper. works like a charm.

  163. I love the red napkins!

  164. What a wonderful idea!
Nothing better than a handmade gift!
    God bless you.
    Kind regards from Germany.

  165. I’d pick teal for the napkins. I always LOVED the spirograph set my Grandma had, spent hours playing with it!

    hensnest at windstream dot net

  166. Thank you for the giveaways! I’d love to win the teal set of napkins.

  167. As for repurposed craft tool, the only thing I can think of at the moment is the toilet paper tube I use to ball my yarn, it works well 🙂

  168. I use baby food jars for my pins. The glass ones are especially nice since I can make a pin cushion for the lid. What’s better than a pin cushion with storage for extra pins?

  169. Very cute! 😀
    Thanks for doing this giveaway!

I am having a giveaway too!! Come check it out if you like. http://hendrixville.blogspot.com/

  170. I have always loved Spirographs! So much that I bought my son one of the new sets two years ago for Christmas and it really isn’t the same. They’ve made it too fancy and complicated. You scored on the vintage set!
I would love a mixed set of the napkins!

  171. For repurposing a craft tool it made perfect sense, someone must have done this before but I haven’t researched it, to use clothes pins when I am hand sewing my binding on a quilt. It’s an easy way to keep the binding in place and I just scoot them along as I sew.
    Thanks for the great giveaways.
p.s. hand sewing is my least favorite thing to do!

  172. This is so cool. 🙂

I think the green would be awesome!

  173. I’d love to win the napkins in teal.

  174. The most interesting thing I’ve repurosed for crafting is using the string on a yo yo to measure the circumference of a jar when I couldn’t find my tape measure. It worked 🙂

  175. I’m loving the red……and I wash out the big plastic meat container and use them to hold my smaller projects. And I use them in the bathroom closet to hold all of the “stuff”. Makes digging through the cabinet easier!!

Cool giveaway!! Have a Merry Christmas!!

  176. I’m lovin’ the whole spirograph design motif you have going.
I like all the colors, so I win, surprise me.

    Thanks

  177. You know how we all buy cones of thread and they work great just sitting on the table behind your sewing machine (until the fall over and roll off the table to some obscure dusty spot WAY in the back behind all the things you’re storing under your sewing space)? Well…enter CD spindels. I’ve recently acquired a few of the tall cd spindels, where we’ve used the cd’s at work. They are PERFECT! They have a stick up the middle and a plastic cover. I just took an exacto knife and removed the center circle out of the plastic cover and tread goes right up the middle to feed into my machine. No dusting and no cussing!!! hahaha…

  178. I remember those! What a fun idea. If I win, Teal is a great color.

  179. I would love to win a set of green napkins! What an awesome idea – and my home is completely paper-towel-free and paper-napkin-free, and could always use more cloth napkins. 🙂

    Thanks for participating! ~Kelly, wyndsung@gmail.com

  180. Teal would be my pick.

  181. Red, please!!

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  182. I love yellow ( can you believe it ?).
Thank you and a Merry Christmas.

  183. How fun! I loved playing with the Spirograph at my grandmother’s when I was a child. (And, I signed my full name to everything – now I have a made-by signature that I use instead!)

  184. I love the read napkins!

  185. I have been wanting the 100 blocks book, I use C clamps to clamp my backing, batting and quilt tops to my dinning room table so I can pin it. I also protect that table with a tope that hubby made out of formica wall board that he took down in our bathroom when we remoldeled
please enter my name in your drawing, thank you, ladycolmn(at)aol(dot)com

  186. Never thought of using a spirograpgh…thats got met thinking about quilts and quilting patterns. I love the periwinkle one!

  187. Old thread spools. Take 2-3 depending on the size. Spray paint all white. Then black just around the top of one. Paint black dots for eyes, a carrot shape on one and black dots for buttons on the others. Thread ribbon through the spool and knot for and cute snowman Christmas ornament.

  188. what a fantastic giveaway!

  189. Giveaway # 1 I love periwinkle and red! Cute idea.

  190. Giveaway # 2 I make wine at home and it has to be kept at a certain temperature for part of the time. My DH made a box with a light bulb in the bottom and a screen on the top which the wine barrel sits on and stays the right temperature. One day when I needed to trace a pattern and was having a hard time doing it on the window I came up with a Eureka idea. DH made an interchangeable top which is glass and I now have a wine warmer cum light box. Hard to copy patterns when I’m making wine though.

  191. I re-purposed a “fun noodle” (cylinder shaped foam that is a pool toy) I measured the depth of my sewing table and cut it to fit. I then sliced thru half way (just to the center hole). Fed it thru the end of my sewing table. How this helps is it keeps my smaller cutting mat in place and also keeps my quilts from falling back off the front of my sewing table while I add more block rows on.

  192. The bridgt blue please.

  193. blue on the napkins

  194. before I got my first cutting mat, I tried to use a wooden cutting board with my rotary cutter. the rotary cutter was so sharp that I got it stuck in the board, I mean really stuck. I was new to the rotary cutter and must have used the same pressure you use to cut pizza with a pizza wheel. boy did I have a lot to learn.

  195. The book and fabric would be such a great thing to win! As for something I’ve repurposed, I have used old stockings, cut and sewn into a little tube (about 2 inches tall, 1 inch wide) to put over invisible thread on the sewing machine. It keeps it from unraveling which it likes to do when left to its own accord! And because the stocking is so lightweight, it doesn’t hinder the thread from coming off the spool. It just keeps it under control!

  196. I like the periwinkle! Thanks for stopping by my blog and entering my give away and sharing your story of giving. for some reason blogger won’t let me access your email address! So I am glad to have found you here!

  197. I would love a multi color set of the napkins.. I was trying to decide which one if my favorite color and this way I don’t have to pick only 1 color… Thanks for the giveaway.

  198. How amazing. Congrats on the extra sales!
Fave color would be teal 🙂

  199. I would love to have a sew of red napkins.

  200. I’d love the napkins in the purple colourway!

  201. I’d love teal!
    Thanks for the chance 🙂

  202. I’d like the blue or multi-colored if possible. And I don’t need them by Christmas ’cause I’ll be in a warmer climate for the holidays!!
What a fabulously creative idea you have here! Hope it brings in many new customers for you♥

  203. I use crochet/tatting hooks to turn out the points in corners–works great! Also, I have a wooden dowel (about 3 feet long and available at any hardware store for about 60 cents) that I use to turn thin tubes right-side-out.
thanks for the giveaway and I love your question–I’m going to use it next year! For now, I think I’ll read through your commenter’s suggestions!!

  204. Love the napkins! How fun! They’d look great in my newly remodeled kitchen!

  205. The link to the shop doesn’t work for me, but I go out on a limb and say that I’d choose the yellow. I like the fabric & magazine, too, so I’ll be happy if I win either!

  206. I’d pick Periwinkle

  207. Aww man, spirograph, I love that thing. I need to find it when I’m at my parents’ next.
What I’d really love to win is the quilting mag and the fabric though.
I’ve repurposed a lot of household things for crafting – I’ve knitted with chopsticks on a plane because I didn’t want to risk losing other needles to security control. I sanded them beforehand and they’re quite good to knit with, I knit a winter hat with them (they’re approximately size 10 needles).
I’ve also used a blender and a loose lampshade to roll yarn onto an empty kitchen paper roll. Not for the faint of heart, but it’ll do in a pinch.

  208. Great giveaway, I had a Spirograph as aa kid too- I havent thought about it for year- so fun.
    Thanks

  209. Beautiful! I would love a bright blue napkin…thanks for the generous giveaway!

  213. What a great giveaway. Spirograph was my favorite item the first Christmas it came out! lol I would love Yellow!
I even remember the tune to the tv ad for it – “with spriograph you can do your own thing!” Thanks!

  214. Great giveaways! If I won the napkins I’d choose red to match my kitchen stuff. Thanks for the chance to win!

    okiedokiemama at yahoo dot com

  215. Hmmm, I use hairspray to stick fabric together so it doesn’t shift around while I sew since I don’t have any of that sticky fabric spray stuff, lol! Thanks for the chance to win!

    okiedokiemama at yahoo dot com

  216. i looooved spirograph as a kid! I’d pick the napkins in red.

  217. I’d like the red napkin

  218. I use a used up pen to trace on paper and cardboard, and thicker fabrics.

  219. I would love, love, love a multicolored set — what a brilliant idea!

  220. I love red for the napkins! I think I love red everything when it comes to kitchen-y stuff!

  221. I totally would adore the green ones. I used to have one of these too!

  222. love the spirograph !!

  223. I use an old dental tool that clamps with a long nose, to pull out things I have sewn in a tube, like handles on a purse. They work great!

  224. i pick purple. love these!
    Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!

    allisonbright{at}gmail{dot}com

  225. I would love those napkins in bright blue 🙂

I would try for the other giveaway- but I cant think of what I repurposed.

  226. I would like the periwinkle blue napkins! Thanks for the giveaway!

  227. Years ago I fashioned a tool to poke out corners from a hanger. It has a round loop on the top and about 6″ long. I smoothed the edges with sandpaper on the pointy end. Still using the first one I made!

  228. Have used spirograph a as kid. thanks for the giveaway.
    Happy holidays

  230. Oh, how funny, just yesterday I was remembering my old spirograph and thinking how cool it would be to dig it out when I’m home this Christmas (if my parents even still have it…). It was one of my favorite toys! If I won, I’d love a set in purple.

Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  231. Woah, blast from the past! Those are awesome – I would dig a mix of colours!

Thanks for the chance to win.

  232. Wow great giveaway! thanks so much..I use flour sieves with removable bases as embroidery hoops cause I couldnt find them any where near where I live and they really work 🙂

  233. I love these napkins they are so cute but simple. I’d love to have a set in bright blue.

  234. I love to up-cycle things from my family of pack rats (the complete opposite of me) I can’t think of any tools I’ve repurposed at the moment but recently I turned a handful of silver plated spoons into coat hooks for my entryway. I just bent the handle into a nice hook (I’m super wimpy but managed to do this by hand) and then had my dad drill a hole in the center of the spoon part so that I could attach them to the wall.

  235. The napkins are cool. Red is a great color.

  236. I would love a set of mixed colors!
    I haven’t seen a spirograph in years!

  237. Thanks for the giveaway. I love teal.

  238. Spirograph napkins in purple for me, please 🙂

  239. Best repurposed craft item would be taking painted canvases off their stretchers and using them as fabric. I created my current lunch bag from one of these canvases and looooove it. I keep meaning to go back to the material, but I get distracted by other things… 🙂 So… not so much a gadget but definitely a different purpose 🙂

  240. What fun!

  241. What fun! Thanks
    kbsteuber at yahoo dot com

  242. Some sock I bought came with a little clothes hanger thingy that got broken, but it was just the right shape to use as a cable needle for my knitting…

    Thanks for the chance!

  243. Samantha McCarthy

I would love those napkins in green….I try to re-purpose sheets into dresses for my daughter….

  244. I’d love to win any of your giveaways…love red so the red napkins would work except there are 6 in our family…maybe I’d use them as decorative placemats. I had a Spirograph growing up, too! And the 100 Blocks book is awesome…. I would love to win it! I’ve used blue mason jars from a yard sale to give gifts in. Last year I stuffed 20 one dollar bills along with some chocolates into a blue mason jar and tied it with a ribbon. Ooooh, my sister was thrilled! I have to say it was the most uniquely wrapped gift under the tree!

  245. please count me in for this great giveaway! cheers from Portugal 🙂

  246. I love the book. I use a chopstick as a stiletto to help push small pieces of fabric under the presser foot

  247. Hello. I love spirographs! Awesome use of it! I was trying to figure out how to quilt something like this, or like those old math projects where you used string and two lines and made a curve by connecting the points. Anyway…I like green 🙂

  248. OMG, I loved my spirograph! I hadn’t thought about that in years! Thanks for reminding me about it. I’d love a set of green napkins if I win.

  249. Blue and green are my favorite colors.

  250. We’ve used a paper cutter to cut straight portions of pdf patterns.

  251. What a great giveaway! So much fun. 🙂

  252. Would LOVE a periwinkle set of the napkins. Such a unique idea!

  253. I will love the napkins, on any color actually, we love cloth napkins around here and we don’t use paper ones at all.
    Thanks for the opportunity.

  254. Adorable! I would pick either teal or purple . . . decisions! Thanks for the chance!

  255. Oh, I love the napkins! What a great idea. As many have said, a mixed colour set would be awesome! But any shade of blue would make me very happy 🙂
    Thanks for being so generous!!

  256. I love the purple napkins!!!!

  257. Teal is my number one choice
Having this baby born already is my number two choice.
    okay kidding
    purple i love too
    thanks!

  258. I would love the blue or red. I can’t decide. You choose for me. Thanks for sharing!

  259. I turned a needle into a quilling tool. I cut the end of the eye off and then wrapped masking tape around the point a bunch to make a handle. It worked great until I could find a real one. Now my kids like to use it to curl paper.

  260. love the multicolor! thannks for sharing!

  261. I do things the other way more often — I’ve often used crochet hooks for computer repairs. But the husband’s a surgeon, so… I’ve used scalpels and suture kits in a pinch!

  262. I would love a set of multicolored napkins. what a great idea for embroidery or quilting pattern. thanks.

  263. Green, please – love them! Thanks so much for the generous giveaway 🙂 Your blog is cute – look forward to reading more after I finish surfing all the others 🙂

  264. Well I’d really like to win the second giveaway real bad!!!!!!!!, love the fabric and would love to own the magazine. So… I’m giving you some of the tips I use for myself:
1- I have different needles for knit and crochet and since it’s difficult to turn a corner, I use the different sizes of them, if some of it doesn’t fit, I use another one!!!!
2- We just learned about trapunto in our quilting classes and my teacher told us to make a cut in the back of the embroidery, add the filling and then sew the cut we just made, I wasn’t in the mood for cut and sew (I was sick) and then I used the needles to make hollows in the back and that way I saved the time to cut and sew as my other partners did :), also it helped me not to fill it alot, and it didn’t showed “waves” I mean, when the fabric isn’t flat when is done!
3-My aunt works with a doctor and she saves me the paper the doc uses for the x rays, it’s really easy because I use the ruler to be more exact, and it’s really easy to storage them. I have ALL the patterns I have made in x-ray paper!, I store then in pizza boxes
3- I use tins to storage scraps of fabrics of the same color, and everything attached to the color, as buttons, ribbons etc. that way I’m not going to look here and there, I know everything of the same color belong to same color!!!!
    **(crossing fingers)**

  265. I’d love to win, please enter me in the drawing, love both of your giveaways!!!

  266. Il semble que vous soyez un expert dans ce domaine, vos remarques sont tres interessantes, merci.
